The Doppler Ultrasonic Flow Sensor is an industrial-grade flow measurement device designed to measure flow velocity and volumetric discharge (flow rate) of liquids in pipes, open channels, rivers, and natural waterways. It operates based on the Doppler ultrasonic principle, detecting the frequency shift of ultrasonic waves reflected by particles or bubbles within the liquid.
This sensor type is suitable for applications where traditional flumes, weirs, or V-notch structures are unavailable or impractical. Its flexible installation makes it ideal for natural environments such as rivers, open canals, and field sites with minimal infrastructure.
The sensor emits ultrasonic waves into the flowing liquid. As the ultrasonic waves encounter suspended particles or bubbles, they are reflected back to the receiver with a shift in frequency (Doppler shift) relative to the transmitted signal. The sensor’s electronics then calculate flow velocity based on the Doppler shift and, combined with water depth, compute volumetric flow rate.
Unlike time-of-flight ultrasonic meters, Doppler flow sensors are particularly effective in applications where the fluid contains small reflecting particles such as in wastewater, rivers with sediment, or open channels with natural solids.
